Stained Glass Quilts
Instructor: Cordy Joan
Date: Saturday, September 21
Time: 11am - 4pm
Location: Standard Parts Studios
928 E 12th St, Oakland, CA 94606
Workshop Description:
Not much thought or attention is paid to the inner layer of quilts aside from maybe how soft or thick it should be. But it is just there that a subtle and secret space for composition and messaging emerges. By cutting letters or shapes into the inner lining, you can add a secret dimension to a quilt’s composition and meaning that is only revealed when light shows through!
In this workshop, we'll learn the basics of hand quilting via the creation of a small stained glass quilt. Beginning with reading and selecting personal phrases from poems that instructor Cordy Joan has assigned in advance (2 to 3 at most), Cordy will lead us through the process of cutting phrases into the inner lining of the quilts. Once the lining is prepared, we’ll learn a variety of both decorative and utilitarian quilting stitches for bringing the whole piece together. Each student will leave with a 20"x13" personal quilt paired with a frame to mount their pieces on at home either adding a light behind it to illuminate the message, or hanging it in the window.
Workshop Fee: $135
Materials Fee: $25
